<![CDATA[Open Text Partners with the University of Waterloo to Create Leading Institute for Web 2.0 and Digital Media]]> http://www.reddot.com/2006.htm http://www.reddot.com/2006.htm Company’s Support Will Create the Open Text Centre for Digital Media Research, Uniting Students, Educators and Professionals in Research and Innovation; Location in Arts Community of Stratford Will Bridge the Worlds of Business, Art and the Internet.

Waterloo, Ontario - 2008-03-27 - Open Text™ Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today announced a partnership with the University of Waterloo to create one of the world’s largest centres dedicated to research and innovation in digital media and Web 2.0 for business, government and cultural applications.

Under the plan, Open Text will contribute funding, technology and services for the development of the Open Text Centre for Digital Media Research. As part of its commitment, Open Text will provide its executives and thought leaders as contributing faculty, sharing their experience in the classroom. The Centre will be dedicated to research projects and commercialization of ground-breaking software applications, giving students an opportunity to apply their ideas to real-world business opportunities. Programs at the Centre will focus on creating graduates that combine business knowledge, with computer science and artistic content creation.

The Centre will be part of graduate and undergraduate programs offered at the University’s Stratford Institute, a proposed new centre for education and research to be located in Stratford, Ontario, a well-known art, music and theatre community. The location provides a unique setting that will bring the worlds of business, art and the Internet together in an environment focused on creating innovative new software applications.

“From Facebook to YouTube to Wikipedia, we are witnessing a revolution in the way consumers socialize, share knowledge and harness collective intelligence,” said Tom Jenkins, Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer for Open Text. “But we’ve only just begun. There’s enormous potential to build on what’s been created so far, and apply these new technologies to business, government and culture in new and exciting ways. Through our partnership with the University of Waterloo, we’re planting the seeds of that innovation right here in the Waterloo Region.”

Jenkins adds, “The Open Text Centre will combine the experience and knowledge of academic and business leaders with the energy and creativity of a new generation. It gives Open Text a direct role in building a highly skilled workforce and R&D leadership right here in our community, and helps secure Waterloo’s position as one of the world’s top communities for technology innovation.”

”By collaborating with Open Text, we are hoping to create an institution that’s recognized worldwide for discoveries that meet the needs of the 21st century digital economy,” said David Johnston, President of the University of Waterloo. “Open Text’s contribution will help accelerate Ontario and Canada into a leadership position in digital media and Web technologies.”

Today’s news follows closely on the heels of Open Text’s March 3 announcement of a broad strategy to deliver new social computing solutions to customers(http://www.opentext.com/news/pr.html?id=2018). As part of its plan, Open Text is extending its collaboration and Web solutions offerings to deliver 2.0 capabilities, including wikis, forums, blogs, tagging, moderation, communities and real-time collaboration, within an organization’s broader ECM strategy. Application of these new technologies creates more engaging Web experiences, improves knowledge sharing and collaboration, increases employee productivity and helps improve brand loyalty and interaction.

Tradition of Innovation
Open Text’s contribution is an extension of the company’s long history as an innovator in the software industry and of its roots in the University of Waterloo. Open Text began on the University’s campus in the late 80s with a group of university researchers who were working on a project to convert the entire Oxford English Dictionary—all 60 million words—to electronic form, a major feat in the pre-Internet days. The work formed the basis for the Internet’s first search engine technology, which was soon adopted by Yahoo.

Since then, Open Text has consistently developed leading technologies in enterprise content management, and counts its staff as some of the industry’s leading experts. Open Text, which is headquartered in Waterloo, is the largest software company in Canada with some 3,000 employees worldwide.

<![CDATA[RedDot Launches Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Integration]]> http://www.reddot.com/1780.htm http://www.reddot.com/1780.htm Open Text Web Solutions Enable Organizations to Expand the Web Visibility of Their Microsoft SharePoint Document Libraries Securely to Any Online Media.

Chicago, IL - Mar 25, 2008 - Open Text™ Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today announced that RedDot, the Open Text Web Solutions Group, has released its Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Document Management Integration.
A successful Web strategy includes the ability to deliver content in context to all visitors. Whether the business initiatives encompass employee productivity on an intranet, customer or partner communication via a secure extranet, or managing localized sites for a strong global strategy; content is the crux of how these goals can be achieved. Organizations currently managing key information within Office SharePoint Server 2007 may also want to offer an experience driven Web environment that can increase the value of content within their document library.

“As part of our strategic leadership in bringing new solutions for the Microsoft platform to the market, we are pleased to add this integration enhancement to our portfolio of leading content management and delivery solutions,” said Daniel Kraft, President, RedDot, the Open Text Web Solutions Group.

RedDot’s integration solution embraces the SharePoint Server 2007 technology by offering value-added features and benefits that include:

 • Cache a document from SharePoint Server 2007: When sharing a document online is important but permissions limit user access, RedDot can publish and retain a resident copy of the document presented to any online target, while maintaining the security and integrity of the SharePoint Server 2007 Library.
 • Link a document from SharePoint Server 2007: Web content editors can address latency and stale Web content by dynamically accessing a document resident in SharePoint Server 2007. Users can link documents via the publishing system to any online target with secure and controlled access from any location.
 • Access different document versions: Administrators can select a specific version of a document to publish with granularity to access previous or minor versions as well.
 • Publish document attributes and metadata from SharePoint Server 2007: The descriptive attributes and metadata of a document help to drive personalization and a rich online user experience. Web content editors can publish document metadata to any online target for classification, search or interactive user insight.

As organizations look to invest in SharePoint Server 2007, this integration release will help them create, access and publish assets out to the web with ease, with the added benefit of being able to extend their technology investment. Open Text is a leader in delivering solutions that extend the Microsoft platform, and has been first to market with new capabilities that enhance SharePoint Server 2007. RedDot’s document management integration continues a string of new solutions for SharePoint released by Open Text this year, including a new offering for the law firm market (URL) and the release of a development framework for the creation of case management applications in SharePoint (URL).

<![CDATA[Open Text Unveils Enterprise 2.0 Strategy]]> http://www.reddot.com/1511.htm http://www.reddot.com/1511.htm Comprehensive Strategy Will Help Organizations Accelerate Social Computing, Embrace Web 2.0, Advance Collaboration and Ensure Compliance; Company Announces New Solutions As Part of Broader 2.0 Strategy

2008-03-03 - AIIM Conf. & Expo 2008, Boston; CeBIT 2008, Hannover - Open Text™ Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today unveiled its Enterprise 2.0 strategy designed to help customers transform their organizations with powerful social computing tools. Open Text is taking its collaboration and Web solutions offerings to a new level, providing 2.0 capabilities -- wikis, forums, blogs, tagging, moderation, communities and real-time collaboration -- that are persuasive, productive and integrated into business processes, while still respecting compliance initiatives.

Web 2.0 technologies have redefined the Web as a platform to harness collective intelligence. Applied in the enterprise, organizations can achieve a future desired state of Enterprise 2.0, where its internal and external web sites and applications get better the more people use them. Application of these new technologies creates more engaging Web experiences, improves knowledge sharing and collaboration, increases employee productivity and helps improve brand loyalty and interaction.

Leveraging its existing Web 2.0 solutions based on its market leading web content management offering, Open Text will provide a comprehensive set of new solutions to better address the broad range of 2.0 requirements. These solutions are aimed at collaboration and social computing requirements behind the firewall as a natural extension of customers' current ECM initiatives (ensuring a tight link to existing content and processes), as well as Web 2.0 enablement of public websites, intranets and extranets.

"In order to be successful, customers must view Enterprise 2.0 within the context of their ECM strategies," said Bill Forquer, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Open Text. "Our ECM leadership is based on advocating a holistic approach, where content originating from multiple sources and repositories can be effectively managed, reused and delivered across the enterprise. An effective Enterprise 2.0 strategy requires a similar holistic approach that factors in all the 2.0 content being created."

Forquer adds, "Many organizations treated email as special content outside their ECM strategy. Consequently, this silo treatment has degenerated email repositories into unmanaged chaos and unquantifiable risk. There is no need to repeat that experience with emerging 2.0 content and rich media."

Open Text has the credentials to help organizations take this holistic approach for their Enterprise 2.0 aspirations, according to Forquer, "We have a track record of innovation in web-centricity, collaboration and search. We're also leaders in helping organizations apply records and archiving rules to content across many systems, from email to SharePoint to SAP to Oracle to our own content repositories. We can bring a holistic view of content that can tie Enterprise 2.0 into the broader ECM context, so that 2.0 content to be managed."

The fundamental elements of Open Text's Enterprise 2.0 strategy include:

 • Experience Optimization: Optimize the end user experience through personalization, language preferences, analytics, voting, tagging, blogs and moderation.
 • Workgroup Optimization: Optimize collaborative applications that enhance the variety of workgroup structures in an organization such as teams, projects, communities of practice and program offices.
 • Enterprise 2.0 Content Management: Provide flexible use of wikis, forums, blogs, tagging, and real-time collaboration. Provide advanced handling of rich-media content, with special emphasis on video, which is quickly becoming the de-facto format for 2.0 style work.
 • Make Enterprise 2.0 Content Safe: Manage Enterprise 2.0 content holistically alongside other content repositories providing a consistent implementation of archiving, disposition, retention and compliance policies.
 • Find Before Search: Intuitively find and deliver information relevant to the user’s then-current context and present that information without the user explicitly searching for the same.

In line with its Enterprise 2.0 strategy, Open Text is emphasizing product development and technology directions that support 2.0 fundamentals, with areas of focus that include:

 • Meta-Data to Underpin Experience Optimization: Deeper levels of meta-data handling will enrich the user experience. This includes richer meta-data handling for content, but with particular emphasis on richer meta-data for people and processes as well. It also includes blending the best of both top-down taxonomies with bottom-up tags.
 • Relationships: Graphing interactions between people, processes and content that can reveal implicit, sometimes hidden, relationships that can be used to optimize business processes.
 • Workgroups: Adapting technology to improve workgroup effectiveness. Additional workgroups include committees, governance boards, escalation teams, and exception management. This also includes blending collaborative escalation and exception handling within high-throughput applications such as Accounts Payable.
 • Classification: Improved intuition to auto-classify content, particularly drawing on past user behaviors and current context.
 • Email Analytics: Building on classifications and graphing interaction, introduce or extend tools that reduce our email dependency and burden, such as auto-promotion of email threads to blogs.
 • New Offerings Accelerate 2.0 Adoption

In September, Open Text also announced a set of solutions for its RedDot Web Content Management suite that help customers 2.0-enable public websites, intranets and extranets.

<![CDATA[Open Text Bridges the Gap Between Editorial and User-Generated Content with RedDot Web 2.0 Modules]]> http://www.reddot.com/company_press_releases_web-two-dot-zero-modules-for-web-content-managment.htm http://www.reddot.com/company_press_releases_web-two-dot-zero-modules-for-web-content-managment.htm Chicago, IL - Until now, organizations looked to bolt-on periphery third party solutions to enhance their Web presence with Web 2.0 functionality such as forums, blogs, comments, and ratings. Open Text™ Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), today announced new offerings providing Web 2.0 capabilities integrated into the company’s RedDot Web Content Management suite. RedDot now makes the integration of interactive applications and Web 2.0 functions possible in all Web-enabled media with new modules for Web 2.0.
"The survival of STA Travel depends on having a successful online presence – it keeps us relevant. Our Web initiatives are required to meet business objectives such as revenue generation, improved online sales conversion rates and increased referral income," comments Peter Liney, Chief Executive Officer of STA Travel. "We see Web 2.0 applications as a critical component to the growth of our site. By providing innovative new features, such as access to our user-generated travel logs and personal recommendations, we can greatly increase the appeal of our sites. With RedDot, the user-generated information is captured and leveraged in the same manner as our editorial content. The information is then shared with visitors through search and other unique experiences."

Web 2.0 is Native to the Content Management System
RedDot allows organizations to expand their Web initiatives to include blogs, forums, wikis, comment fields, and ratings as easily as selecting files or images and incorporating these applications into the Web site. Editors can easily initiate discussions in an intranet setting, or write an editorial entry, attach documents, and expand it with a forum or blog. Specific user groups can be easily granted "read" and "write" authorization. Best of all, the components can be easily reused for multiple Web projects.
Combining Editorial and User-Generated Content

Using RedDot to deliver Web 2.0 applications offers organizations the unique ability to keep all relevant content in a single repository thereby extending the overall business knowledge. Both user-generated content and editorial content become part of the organization’s managed information assets, thereby contributing to growth. All content, whether editorial or user-generated, can be accessed through centralized search, enhancing the visitors experience well beyond the traditional Web paradigm.

Security and Personalization for Web 2.0 Content
Today, organizations are demanding a persona-driven Web access tailored to respective information requirements, using portals and single sign-on. Personalization concepts now also access user-generated content through the integration of Web 2.0 functions in RedDot. Using metadata such as language, regions, hierarchies, occupational groups, departments, and interests, knowledge can be assigned and accessed accordingly.

As a leader in Web Content Management, Open Text extends its RedDot solution with Web 2.0 components providing companies with the opportunity to exceed their goals for an innovative, interactive and compelling Web experience, bringing social networks capabilities to the forefront.

"Web 2.0 and social computing have reached the enterprise, moving beyond being a technological trend to becoming an essential component of successful Web strategies for leading organizations," said Daniel Kraft, President of RedDot, the Open Text Web Solutions Group. "Organizations are increasingly demanding seamless integration of Web 2.0 capabilities in our Web solutions offering as a key to their success. With the new Web 2.0 capabilities from RedDot, our customers can now achieve a closer relationship with their internal and external target audiences, while preserving the valuable information generated by end-users who contribute and collaborate."

This newly revamped program enhances the current RedDot partner program certifying individual consultants and project managers that have successfully implemented content management solutions within the large RedDot customer base. This initiative is part of Open Text’s continued commitment to enhancing and extending the reach and capabilities of its partners.

RedDot has initiated the certification program with participation from current partners including, at the Premier level, Enthink, MarketNet and Purple Monkey, and at the Advanced level, Miller Systems, Indelible Media, Oshyn, Thrillworks, POP, Beaconfire, and Infused Solutions. These partners are providing customers with a more comprehensive content management and delivery solution.

“RedDot’s solutions comprise exactly the tools our customers want to enhance their Web initiatives,” said Steven Saraceno, President of Purple Monkey Studios. “We are pleased to be included in their partner program and consider it a key to our future success.”

The certification program was developed with input from RedDot’s Professional Services group, partners, support staff and customers.

“Leading agencies, integrators, and technology firms recognize the value of RedDot’s offering,” said Detlef Kamps, General Manager of RedDot, in North America. “RedDot’s content management and delivery solutions coupled with innovative software and Web strategy will help our partners to increase revenues and offer customers the solutions and expertise they need to run an efficient e-business.”

<![CDATA[RedDot Finds College and University IT Departments Spend Disproportionate Time on Basic Web Content Needs]]> http://www.reddot.com/RedDot-Finds-College-and-University-Spend-Disproportionate-Time-on-Basic-Web-Content-Needs.htm http://www.reddot.com/RedDot-Finds-College-and-University-Spend-Disproportionate-Time-on-Basic-Web-Content-Needs.htm Chicago, IL - Open Text™ Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), the largest independent provider of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software and solutions, said a survey by RedDot, The Open Text Web Solutions Group, shows that the demands of managing Web sites is overloading university IT departments. The survey of IT professionals in colleges and universities across the U.S. found that the demands on IT departments have risen fast because IT staffers must spend a disproportionate amount of time managing Web content, rather than pressing IT projects. Respondents were surveyed at the recent Creating an Online Campus and HighEdWebDev conferences.

In the survey, 91 percent of respondents said demands on their school’s IT departments have risen, most of which involve requests by faculty/staff to take care of basic Web needs. The majority of these requests involve IT departments making content updates to various pages of the campus Web site, something that can be easily achieved by faculty/staff.

“This survey clearly shows the need for Web content management software in the world of higher education technology,” said Marc Goldstein, Vice President of Sales for Exgenex Education, the organization that presented the Creating An Online Campus event. “IT professionals from colleges and universities across the country continue to find themselves mired in the daily routine of content updates on their campus Web sites and Intranets. Though important, these tasks place unnecessary demands on an IT staff that needs to focus on more complicated issues. Web content management software allows an administration’s staff and faculty to update Web content on their own, liberating the IT staff to address mission-critical IT tasks.”

In addition, the survey found that 64 percent of respondents said the number of tasks students and staff can accomplish on their own campus Web sites has increased in just the past year. These tasks include registering for classes, dropping/adding classes, class roster functions and other campus activities that in the past required in-person meetings or traditional paper-based systems. The survey also found that 70 percent of respondents expect increases in online admission submissions in 2007.

Other findings include:

 • A majority of respondents (53 percent) said an up-to date and easily navigated Web site is very important to their institutions
 • 43 percent felt that their institutions have been successful with current online offerings, while 26 percent said the offerings have been only somewhat successful – which may be why 80 percent of respondents say their institutions are planning some type of changes to their online resources in the next year.

Methodology
This higher education survey was presented to a variety of higher education IT faculty from colleges and universities across the United States. The study was conducted at the "Creating an Online Campus" Event (October 3-4, 2006) and the HighEdWebDev 2006 Conference (October 22-25, 2006) with over 80 respondents successfully completing the survey. The questionnaire is available upon request.

What's more, Hanken explains, the Web site became more difficult to manage due to the inclusion of a sales portal. Ensuring that Multiquip offered the most current data specs and pricing was extremely time-consuming.

<![CDATA[Site revamp spreads the truth to youths]]> http://www.reddot.com/company_articles_Web-content-maintenance-cost.htm http://www.reddot.com/company_articles_Web-content-maintenance-cost.htm Hoping to expand its presence in the youth market, the American Legacy Foundation has partnered with Web content manager RedDot Solutions to redesign its Web site.

DMNews - The New York nonprofit has seen success Truth (http://www.truth.com/) a national ad and television campaign bluntly stating the dangers of smoking. It seeks similar recognition through its new site at http://www.americanlegacy.org/.

“The point behind the new design of the Web site is to update and upgrade our overall portal of information,” said Joe Marytak, executive vice president of marketing, communications and public policy for the foundation. “Anyone interested in the issues of smoking tobacco, quitting smoking or a prevention effort for their teenagers can get that with the new design.”

The design went live Dec 1. RedDot helped the group cut Web management and maintenance costs. Previously, an in-house team managed its Web content.

“We went with RedDot because they were able to create an ease of use, more scalable features and a browser that can enable an environment based on their own experience,” Mr. Marytak said. “They also understand the non-profit world.”

RedDot, New York, worked with the March of Dimes on a similar project.

With RedDot, American Legacy can efficiently update its site with content, images and graphics that better communicate the dangers of smoking. As the foundation focuses on youth prevention and adult cessation goals and activities, RedDot’s software lets the nonprofit’s researchers and staff easily add content and manage present content on the site.

“We are redesigning our Web site looking toward the new youth market,” Mr. Marytak said. “We want to make it as user-friendly as possible, more attractive and to make the navigation process easier.”

According to American Legacy, 70 percent of the 45 million US smokers want to quit. The foundation develops programs that address the health effects of tobacco use through grants, technical assistance and training, youth activism, strategic partnerships, counter-marketing and grassroots marketing campaigns, research, public relations and outreach to populations disproportionately affected by tobacco.

“We have also begun looking into the community aspect of it,” Mr. Marytak said. “We want to have video streams and create a more integrated experience.”
